Hooray to all of us for having survived the horrible cold and snowy winter of 2013-2014 in Ely, MN near the Boundary Waters area of Northeast Minnesota. The winter started early in November and continued well into April. Still at this date in about the middle of June, the temperatures are definitely not over whelming. We ended up having 96.2 inches of snow. But now, all of that is past, and we are gearing up for a fun filled summer.

Naturally, the guys, Willy, AJ, and Logan, have been preparing the docks to their summer stature, launching the boats, and being sure the motors are in proper working order.

We often store some of our boats away from the shores of our Moose Lake banks in the winter, so naturally, we have to relocate them from their winter habitat to their summer residency near our shores.

Because, so far it has been a very cool spring, they also are making sure there is plenty of wood for all of the wood burning stoves in the cabins, which help keep them more than toasty on very cool nights.

Our friends, the humming birds are back and are enjoying our artificial nectar until the flowers with their preferred nectar return.

As some of our friends came up from the south, they stopped in Superior, WI on May 26th to take pictures of the lake. They saw spots of open water near the shore, then massive amounts of ice out even further with the ore shipping boats seemingly caught in between the shore and the depths far out on the lake. We just heard today, that finally, on June 10th, 2014, all of the ice had disappeared. Many news photos had previously shown people canoeing or kayaking through the clumps of ice that still remained on the lake. Reportedly, this is the latest the ice has ever remained on the lake.

Again because of the massive amount of snow that we had, the Kiwishiwi Falls was running over its normal boundaries with quite a rush.

Willy was returning from town one evening, just about sunset, and saw two moose going up the hill just above Jude's/ Hibbard's Creek. Anyway, as we said, there were two female moose meandering up the hill on and off the road. He thought it must have been a mom and her second year old "baby". Unfortunately, he was only able to get a picture of one of them. Our neighbors have reported that other people have seen foot prints up by the Wind Lake portage. Since moose are nomads, this could be possible, but we don't know if it is the same pair.

So spring has sprung in the north woods and is beckoning everyone to come see the true natural beauty of the area. We would love to see each and every one of you who receives this newsletter. We welcome all of you.
