Well, it is the end of March in the North Woods of Minnesota, Ely to be exact. Spring has yet to spring, but at least we have seen the last of the cold winter snows. We could get some wet spring snows, which because of the moisture the snow carries will help to raise the water levels in the lakes.

One day, Willy decided to come out to the resort via plane. Because the ice was still about 36 inches deep, he was able to land on the lake in front of the boat house. At the top of the picture, our lodge is peaking out between the trees.

Then he walked up to the house and took a picture of the plane down on the lake some 210 feet below. It is a little difficult to see, but the plane, which from that vantage point looks like a toy, is a bit to the right in the picture.

Even though it is well past the first day of spring and we are supposed to have green grass and flowers, unfortunately, we still have snow. Most of the left over snow is on the north side of the roads, in clumps where it has been plowed, and in spots in the woods where the sun has not had a chance to "tickle" it. But because the sun is much higher in the sky, our pine trees, which appear to be very dark in the winter, are now returning to their beautiful shades of green.

The picture above shows the entry point at Lake One (truly the end of the road) where campers launch their canoes. Obviously, there will be no canoes on the lake in the near future.

When approaching our Custom Cabins Resort by car, there is a creek in a valley, which is referred to as Hibbard's Creek. One can see that the creek is beginning to thaw, but one can also see that the heavy grass on the side of the creek is very brown and dry. Hence our no burn levy until things begin to "green up".

On the other hand, Fall Lake, which is closer to town, is totally open, but there are still remnants of the snow on the banks.

As one drives toward Ely, there is a creek by Winton. We were fortunate enough to capture pictures of geese on their trek north into Canada. This picture also shows that the aspens have not begun to bud.

The good thing about this time of year is that we are seeing more and more of our beautiful blue skies. We are still anxiously awaiting the return of our green grass and trees. But more importantly, we are looking forward to the return of all of our friends, who along with us, love to soak up the north woods atmosphere. We invite all of you to come up and join us enjoying this wonderful country.
