Has July come and gone already in the north woods? The Blueberry festival held in Ely, MN at the end of the month was a great success with many many crafts for sale along with good food, and tons of various blue berry treats. Because we have had a lot of rain, the blue berries and raspberries have been prolific. Not only was this good for the festival, but it also helps keep the beers and other animals in the woods eating their food rather than on our door steps trying to eat ours.

This seems to be the summer of birds. While walking, one of guests found this little grouse which appeared to have been had been bumped by a car, and when found was in the middle of the road appearing to be stunned and not in good shape. Mom and the rest of the kids were in the ditch on the side of the road. Naturally, mom was in a total dither. Our guest carefully lifted the chick to the ditch on the side of the road where she hoped mom would reclaim it. She then came up to the lodge to get some dog food which she mixed with water, and a very narrow stir stick. She "tube" fed the baby. Then later checked on it and it appeared markedly better. Mom was still hovering around. She fed it again in the evening, and the next day the entire family had moved on.

Since summer is the season for animal babies, we found some loons with their little ones. The parents were wearing their brighter summer stripes, but the babies were still little "fuzz balls". It is hard to believe they will actually mature enough to drop their "fuzz" and be able to fly south to Louisiana and Texas by about the end of September. But then we have difficulty realizing the tiny humming birds can actually migrate all the way to South America. Of course they make many stops on their way south, but still, it is a very long trip for such little birds.

This loon was doing its stretching routine. After swimming in the lake, they often will rear up on their feet and flap their wings, seemingly just stretching as we do after having sat for a while.

As we have said, because of the rain we have had, everything is very lush-the trees, flowers, grass, and the berries. We often go to various spots that we know in order to harvest blue berries and raspberries. The blue berries often are found in areas that have been clear cut for lumber.

Even though the lakes have been a little above their average for this time of year, fishing has not been hindered. While the very large fish make super pictures, rest assured that they are given a hug, and then very gently returned to the lake to go home to have/make more babies-the eatable size. Naturally, our fishermen would not disclose the locations of their catch.

This is a 22.5 inch bass that weighed 8.5 pounds.

Here is a giant northern for which no measurement was taken.

And finally a 28 inch+ walleye weighed in at about 10.5 pounds.

Anyway, a good time was had by all, and all happily ever after! We invite you to come visit us and you can have a good time too.
